Fare's fair at Fine Fare!

Fare's fair at Fine Fare!

On departing Blackpool's Talbot Road Bus Station, Blackpool Corporation Transport 390 (CFR590C), a Metro Cammell bodied Leyland PD3 makes it's way down Talbot Road, passed the Fine Fare Supermarket, before heading out towards Lytham St Anne's a little further down the coast.

Fine Fare was the name of a chain of supermarkets in the United Kingdom until the late 1980s. It was famous for its Yellow Pack budget own-label range, probably one of the first store sub brands or tertiary brand names in the UK. The Melias chain of convenience stores was also part of the Fine Fare group.

The company was acquired by Associated British Foods in 1963 and Fine Fare's corporate headquarters were in Welwyn Garden City. Its market share was generally reported as being third behind Sainsurys and Tesco, who were No1 and No2 respectively.

In the mid-1980s, ABF sold the company to The Dee Corporation (then trading as Gateway, nowadays known as Somerfield) as one of a series of acquisitions Dee made around that time including the Woolco and Carrefour hypermarket chains. Following this, all Dee's newly-acquired stores were rebranded as Gateway or closed, and the Fine Fare name disappeared. Later some larger Gateway stores were bought by ASDA and were rebranded.

Fare Evasion Will Cost You

Fare Evasion Will Cost You

The MTA puts all these damn signs all over the place with signs warning, "Fare Evasion Will Cost You." The fact of the matter is that the majority of those who evade the fare are those who can't afford it. Many of these are those with substance abuse issues.

Perhaps the MTA should stop posting these signs everywhere and instead focus on their current budget shortfall. And maybe they could also focus on adjusting the attitude of some MTA workers.

The Real Meal Deal

The Real Meal Deal

April 11, 2011 - On our flights from San Jose, Costa Rica to Belize City, Belize we had to stop over in San Salvador, El Salvador. We were bumped to first class on these flights. It's the first time we ever had seats #1 and #2. We even got food! Unfortunately each flight was only about an hour.

Day 12: Loki Sprawled

Unfortunately, this was the best photo I could do today. I found out that our flight to Belize got canceled at the last minute and so we had to find alternate transportation. I only got in a couple of photos today before I had to deal with that mess. 12 January 2007.

Dutch III: International Gangster

It's one month before Dutch's trial for what the media has deemed "the Month of Murder," Roc and Angel are locked up, and Craze is now the commander in charge. After coming into contact with Joseph Odouwo, Kazami's very rich and powerful relative, Craze is immediately on alert. However, Odouwo has other plans that may put all of their lives at risk. Craze can't resist a stake in Odouwo's very successful billion-dollar diamond trade, and reluctantly takes Odouwo up on his offer, hoping that he didn't make a decision he will soon regret.

I missed my connection back to USA in Amsterdam (not my fault), so KLM gave me quite the goodies package. I have to say that KLM treated me better than any US airline has ever treated me in a jam. Besides the 5 minute international calling card to tell my wife that I'm not going to be home, they have me a 10€ voucher to get a snack in the airport (worth about US$16 at the time).

Well unfortunately that doesn't actually go too far in an airpot, this is what I got for €10.30 or so, luckily I still had about €0.75 in change. Two grilled sandwiches, one is cheese, the other is ham and cheese, and they were both pretty pathetic. The ham one had an almost imperceptible slice of ham which would be something like "ultra-thin shaved" in deli terminology. The upside was the little glass of gin, which was cheaper than the sandwiches I think, and pretty good. You can zoom in and check out the receipt if you're curious.

The funny part was that they had Amstel light for something like $8 for a fairly small beer, like bottle size or smaller. I guess they sell a lot on novelty value, it was kind of absurd. That's why I ended up getting gin.

[ 88/365 ] hardly anything more healing

To the soul, there is hardly anything more healing than friendship.
-Thomas Moore (1779 - 1852)

Lucky me, lucky me! I got another day with my Dutch twin, this time in Den Bosch. We wandered and wandered around the city, took an interesting boat tour (Kaat had to translate for me), ate some great food, indulged our Subway vice, and took a few photos of course.

Its so strange- we've only been face-to-face friends for about 6 months or so, but I can't imagine what it's going to be like when there's a big ocean between us again. I guess it means that I will have the Netherlands on my cheap airline ticket alerts, and hopefully we can come up with some reasons to drag her to Texas.

James Bernard Jr., a.k.a. Dutch, has become the most dangerous criminal in New Jersey. From his early skill as a car thief, Dutch recognized the opportunity to rule the streets and he seized it. Feared by all, and completely fearless, Dutch and his dangerous clique take over the lucrative heroin business of a local African drug lord. With both the protection and respect of the Mafia, Dutch becomes the most terrifying force on the streets. District Attorney Anthony Jacobs is determined to take down Dutch and his crew, and he's confident that his witnesses will testify against them. But a sudden turn of events will soon make the DA's job harder than he imagined.

Well, we made it. When I originally planned on coming to Vancouver Island I had an earlier flight. When Jenny decided to come we switched to a later, cheaper one. So it was very late by the time we got to our hotel, especially considering the time difference for us. But we're here!

unfortunately i had the ISO up too high so some of the pictures i've taken so far are too grainy

On a high-desert plateau of the Snake River Plain in southwestern Idaho, Boise, the A‚A“City of Trees,A‚A” began as an encampment on the Oregon Trail along the Boise River. Natives were soon after displaced, and by 1864, a town site was platted north of the river, abutting the garrison at Fort Boise. Early settlers found livelihoods as merchants, supplying miners in the Boise Basin, where gold was discovered in 1862. Boiseans experienced difficulty accepting a municipal government and had to wrest territorial status from Lewiston in northern Idaho. Through decades of irrigation and commerce, they grappled with isolation and a scarcity of goods and amenities, which produced a remarkably resilient and vibrant population. From the railroad in 1880s to statehood in 1890, the interurban, and the airplane, rocket, and computer chipA‚A–making eras, Boise continues to grow and thrive.

Boise River diversion dam for New York Canal (IMG 2127c)

This is taken from a series shot on an extremely windy, gusty day (up to 35 mph, I think) using my FF16 kite and holding on for dear life to the winder with both hands. The scene looks downriver to the west. The Boise city skyline is barely visible on the far left of the horizon. The hills are affectionately known as the Boise Foothills, very popular for hiking and biking. Near the highest visible mountain top is the local ski area, Bogus Basin. "Bogus" comes from Boise's brush with counterfeiters who were thought to be improving the value of their paper and ink in a mountain hideaway, probably more than 100 years ago.

Downtown Boise. This photo was taken looking north on Capitol Blvd standing on the Boise River bridge. Turning right at the first stoplight takes you into Julia Davis Park which contains the Boise Art Museum, the Idaho Historical Museum, and Zoo Boise. Turning left would take you to the Boise Public Library. The Idaho State Capitol stands prominently at the end of the boulevard. The Boise foothills are in the background, and contain dozens of miles of trails for walking and biking. The US Bank building on the left - a skyscraper 20 stories high - is the tallest building in the state of Idaho.
