Los Angeles, CA: More Coastaly

At the flight layover in LAX, the airport shops are giving me a preliminary infusion of the quirky color-splashed coastal vibe that I'll find all over Australia. In that spirit, I picked up some cheap whimsical bracelets that make shell-like sounds. Time to forget about New York for a couple weeks. I'm shooting for sun poisoning within 72 hours.

Unbound Feet: A Social History of Chinese Women in San Francisco

Unbound Feet: A Social History of Chinese Women in San Francisco

The crippling custom of footbinding is the thematic touchstone for Judy Yung's engrossing study of Chinese American women during the first half of the twentieth century. Using this symbol of subjugation to examine social change in the lives of these women, she shows the stages of "unbinding" that occurred in the decades between the turn of the century and the end of World War II.
The setting for this captivating history is San Francisco, which had the largest Chinese population in the United States. Yung, a second-generation Chinese American born and raised in San Francisco, uses an impressive range of sources to tell her story. Oral history interviews, previously unknown autobiographies, both English- and Chinese-language newspapers, government census records, and exceptional photographs from public archives and private collections combine to make this a richly human document as well as an illuminating treatise on race, gender, and class dynamics.
While presenting larger social trends Yung highlights the many individual experiences of Chinese American women, and her skill as an oral history interviewer gives this work an immediacy that is poignant and effective. Her analysis of intraethnic class rifts--a major gap in ethnic history--sheds important light on the difficulties that Chinese American women faced in their own communities. Yung provides a more accurate view of their lives than has existed before, revealing the many ways that these women--rather than being passive victims of oppression--were active agents in the making of their own history.

I was drove back home and just feel to get out right away you can imagine three bachelors were living there for 10 days what that place could be Sink full of dishes cans of juices & sodas in living room really how messed up this house is while we were together We did not even noticed that mess we have created :OOh I have to clean up all this:(((O so before I collapsed my fortune cookies was in front of my eyes saying "Find release from your cares. have a good time." Where I can find good time?? and first word came to my mind LAS VEGAS:PPP So I just got out of my house and drove to the freeway to Las Vegas ;-)))Yup I had really good time in different casinos my favorite one is on 3400 Las Vegas Blvd while I was there enjoying to see how people are betting on different tables and I won just 100 dollars:(( that time I feel I need a drink;-)) and I went to the bar and what have I asked the bartender he was not surprised but shocked with wide opened eyes:D:D: I have asked him a cup of tea and seeing his amusing face I have and please be sure English Tea with milk and sugar in it. He was very nice though just did not ask me to go some where to get tea he just say yes mama and after half & hour tea was there seems the brought those tea leafs directly from Ceylon and I know if I have ordered any hard drinks that gonna be in seconds in front of me:D any ways I was enjoying my tea sitting there I have heard a gasp from women around me and reason of those gasps was an exceptionally tall, handsome, extremely sexy young man who just entered in the room.He was so striking so like other women I was not able to take away from him her eyes away from him. Seems sexy boy noticed my overly-attentive stare and walked directly toward me.:-O Before I could offer my apologies for being so rude for staring, that young man said to me seeing directly in to my eyes, "‘I’ll do anything, absolutely anything, that you want me to do for $100, on one condition." Astonished me:-> have asked what is the condition? You have to tell me what you want me to do just in three words.he replied. Ah! you know my grammar and preposition sucks however I have thought for a sec and pulled out 100 bucks I just have won on a table ;-)) and handed over him along with my address, looking deeply into his eyes I said, "Clean my House."

cost of flight - Reducing Space

Reducing Space Mission Cost (Space Technology Library)

Reducing Space Mission Cost (Space Technology Library)

Reducing Space Mission Cost is the first complete treatment of the technology, process, and problems in the most critical areas of modern spaceflight. The demand to reduce cost is unrelenting. This pioneering book addresses all aspects of this problem, including:
Technology and processes for reducing cost
Cost reduction in mission engineering, spacecraft design, manufacture, launch, and operations
Implementation methods and problems
The price of reducing cost
10 detailed case studies of what works in practice in:
Science missions
Interplanetary probes
Communications spacecraft
Test and Applications missions

Beginning on the inside front cover, this book provides real cost data on a variety of missions, systems, and subsystems. According to the authors:
`Reducing mission cost is hard enough if you know what the real costs are, and virtually impossible if you don't.'
This book challenges traditional methods, yet recognizes that all space programs are run to minimize cost within the rules under which they are built and flown. It provides practical recipes for reducing cost in both new and ongoing missions and discusses what works, what government can do to help, and what methods intended to reduce cost may be counterproductive and unintentionally increase cost. As shown on the inside rear cover, the case studies described in the book have reduced total mission cost by 80% to more than 90% with respect to projections by traditional cost methods.
This book is a follow-on to the now standard text and reference, Space Mission Analysis and Design, also edited by Drs. Wertz and Larson. It is required reading for professionals, students, and managers in astronautics or space sciences and managers or scientists involved in space experiments. This book shows that reducing space mission cost, without reducing reliability, is as possible as it is important for the future of space exploration.

Queens Flight BAe142 ZE710

Queens Flight BAe142 ZE710

Queens Flight BAe142 ZE710, parked on stand 9 at Exeter International Airport overnight, 5th December 2010.

ZE701 was built in 1985, construction number 1029 LN:29

On 1 April 1995 The Queen's Flight was merged into No. 32 Squadron RAF to become No. 32 (The Royal) Squadron. Its BAe 146s and two Westland Wessex HCC.4 helicopters moved from Benson to 32 Squadron's base at RAF Northolt. This ended the RAF's provision of dedicated VIP transport aircraft; the aircraft of 32 Squadron are only available to VIP passengers if not needed for military operations. This was declared officially in 1999, with the Ministry of Defence stating "the principal purpose of 32 Squadron [is] to provide communications and logistical support to military operations; the Squadron's capacity should be based on military needs only; and any royal or other non-military use of... spare capacity is secondary to its military purpose." The effect of this declaration was to radically reduce the charge per hour to the royal travel grant-in-aid for flying in an RAF jet, because now only the variable costs of the flight were expensed to the royal travel budget. In the 2007/2008 fiscal year only 9% of the flying hours of the squadron were devoted to flying the Royal Family and their staff.
The Squadron also has six smaller British Aerospace BAe 125 CC3 jets, which seat a maximum of six passengers. The last of these jets was delivered in February 1984.

Flight departures board at TLV Terminal 3 showing flight to Kaliningrad

My mother grew up in East Prussia, the easternmost province of the German empire, bordering on Russia. The capital of East Prussia was Koenigsberg which after the Second World War was taken over by the Soviet Union and renamed Kaliningrad. It was a military area, off limits for all foreigners and many Russians. Now, only 18 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, there are flights from Tel Aviv to Kaliningrad by the Russia low-cost airline KD Avia. Who would have believed it?

The environmental cost implication of hub-hub versus hub by-pass flight networks [An article from: Transportation Research Part D]

This digital document is a journal article from Transportation Research Part D, published by Elsevier in 2007. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Increasing congestion at major hubs and the advantage to passengers of non-stop flights and faster journey times has intensified the debate on patterns of air service. At the same time the economics of highly focused networks has been challenged by the availability of very economic smaller capacity long-haul aircraft. The purpose of this research is to value the environmental costs of these two patterns of service: hub-to-hub and hub by-pass. Five long-haul markets were evaluated both on a hub to hub and hub by-pass basis. These involved both transatlantic and Europe/Asia flights. It was found that the noise and emissions social cost impact of the hub by-pass networks was significantly lower than the hub to hub in all cases. Differences in environmental costs per passenger depend on the concentration of population around the airports and the degree to which the hub routing involves extra mileage.

The irony in this picture.

Monday night, our flight leaving Vegas left about 40 minutes late due to rain. Once we got on the plane headed to Los Angeles for our plane change, our flight attendants assured us they would hold the Seattle bound plane for us, as we'd be cutting it close to make our connection. There were 28 of us who were making that connection.

Once we finally landed in LA, they told the 28 of us to hurry of the plane and run to the shuttle so we could run to the other terminal where the plane was waiting for us. We all ran down through the airport only to get to a non-functioning shuttle. A sweet airport worker then ran all of us to our terminal. And I mean ran - for probably a good half mile..to our other terminal so we could make our flight.

We had to rush back through security and ran down to our gate..in a pack...and we reached our gate, the agent told us they could not hold our plane. All of us stood there in shock as she told us they closed the door 1 minute prior and they were not allowed to reopen it for us. The most painful part was seeing our plane still sitting at the gate not going anywhere.

We tried to get a comp out of the ordeal, but we got absolutely nothing...except for a discounted hotel, that was pretty worthless. We decided to just tough it out and sleep in the terminal. We got kicked out of the main terminal, and were forced to go to the International Terminal. We moved about 3 times looking for carpet, or a bench or something to sleep on. It was a very restless night. They were doing construction in the terminal, so it was open and very loud, and was about 35 degrees. It was misery trying to sleep and stay warm -- and we didn't get either of those.

At about 4:30 we picked up our things and moved to our main terminal and waited at our gate for our 6 am flight. It was a terrible, terrible night, and I was so happy to come back home to Seattle.

Day 1: Downtown Seattle

Day 1: Downtown Seattle

So we haven't started the road trip yet, but we've kicked off our trip in good ol' Seattle. I lived here in '80-'83; a lot of things have changed, some things haven't changed a bit.

We met my wonderful Flickr friend {machel spence} and her family (beautiful India, too!), which was a blast. Did a lot of geek talk; talked about our kids' education; Machel gave us a couple of her *spectacular* mushroom pictures, and Shingo got a butterfly on a mount!! We were sorry we couldn't spend more time together, but Machel promised to take me to Mt. Rainier the next time we visit. Cool. We just need to make that like next month :-D

Climbed the Space Needle for the first time in like 30 years. And what do you do when you climb high places? TILT SHIFT, BABY.
